Job Description – Interpreter 


Job Summary: The role of the interpreter is to serve as the facilitator for both the clientt and provider in order to attain accurate communication between both parties. The interpreter must be a trained professional who has proficient knowledge and vocabulary in both English and the target language of the client. This requires the interpreter to have extensive skills in both target languages, mastery of relevant terminology, and cultural sensitivity with respect to all parties involved. This position involves travel to various hospitals, clinics, and businesses in select regions. (usually a 30 minute radius) 

Job Qualifications: 
Minimum Qualifications: (When Possible) 

Demonstrated proficiency in English and target language 
At least two years of college (or equivalent) 
Interpreting experience 
Demonstrated relevant terminology proficiency 
Life experience / Cultural Immersion 
Extensive knowledge of ethics and the role of the interpreter 
Excellent customer service skills 

Desired Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) 
Interpreting coursework at college level and/ Social work/communications, linguistics/related degrees such as cultural and language studies 
Basic Medical terminology coursework at college level if applicable


Job Responsibilities: 
Accurately and completely interpret for appointments at local hospitals, clinics, home visits, social service agencies, and businesses 
Assure that patient or client understands all questions, instructions, and other information 
Arrive ten minutes early for all appointments 
Follow patient to ancillary appointments if on-site (lab, pharmacy, etc.) 
Place reminder calls to patients or clients one to two days prior to interpreting appointment 
Arrange transportation for patient through patient’s insurance (if necessary) 
Abide by the interpreter code of ethics at all times 
Maintain patient confidentiality at all times 
Maintain a relationship of trust and respect with all parties 
Maintain open and effective communication with interpreter coordinator(s) in order to ensure accurate management of appointment schedules 
Complete all required paperwork and submit to billing office in a timely fashion 
Strive to further professional and educational skills and knowledge
